LIFESTYLE scheduled activities & impromptu happenings

The lifestyle that you choose to lead here can be as active or tranquil as you want, but we will have plenty going on every day to tempt you to be active.

The residence and parlor areas are designed and decorated to encourage impromptu gatherings of residents, or small visits with your family and friends. We encourage you to make full use of all the various areas of the facility, both inside and out.

Activities and Happenings

“Love makes the world go round but laughter keeps us from getting dizzy.”

What you bring to our community is your lifetime of experiences. So much of what happens here is ever changing, based on our residents’ backgrounds, personal histories and interests.

We realize that quality of life has different meanings for different people. Together, with regular input from our residents, activities schedules encompass the interests and passions of our residents. Our activities programming is a blend of cultural, social, musical events – and just plain fun.

We celebrate every holiday imaginable – from the traditional to the obscure. On the major holidays of Christmas, New Years, Easter and Thanksgiving, our cooks put together a multi-course family style meal – but of course, it wouldn’t be family style if you didn’t invite your family and friends to join.

Throughout the year, we are having a grand time right along with the rest of the world. Put on your mask for Mardi Gras and break out your maracas for Cinco de Mayo. When the athletes are receiving their gold, silver and bronze medals at the Olympic ceremonies, our residents are participating in our own Wii Olympics and receiving their own medals. Academy Awards? We have our own Red Carpet ceremony. Have the grandchildren come by and check out some iguanas, cockatiels, baby boas or an Argentine black & white Tegu during our Earth Day activities.

But let’s not forget some of the more obscure holidays, because we are always looking for a reason to celebrate. National Pancake Day was a yummy favorite. Could we have a Pu Pu Platter for thirty on the Chinese New Year? The cooking club will make some fresh apple crisp on Johnny Appleseed Day. Or join us at the behordenhof on the east side of the Theresienwiese during Oktoberfest – and be sure to wear your sennerhut, lederhosen and dirndl.

It’s your birthday? We won’t let the day go by unnoticed. Is boiled lobster your birthday meal wish? Filet mignon? Chicken cordon blue? Our kitchen crew will prepare it special for you on your special day.

Some of the favorite activities

Piano Bar – Some of New England's best piano bar talent comes to you with a very interactive repertoire while you enjoy an afternoon cocktail. Families and friends join in regularly.

Socials – Get together with friends and chat during the weekly Coffee Klatch, or just sit back and be served during our ice cream socials, English tea parties, cocktail parties and cookouts.

Memories & Reminiscing – Chat about your wedding, your first job, favorite pet, or favorite neighbors. Bring along old photos and share your memories. The topics are endless.

Music – Bagpipes, piano, accordion, vocals, sing-a-longs…we love music.

Gardening Club – plant some seeds during Earth Day for our vegetable and flower gardens, help plant our lush gardens in the spring, or be an armchair gardener and just sit outside and enjoy the beauty of the flowers or pick and bite into some fresh cherry tomatoes and cukes.

World Events – Share your life’s experiences during the Current Events/News & Views discussion group, History hour or the Biography hour.

Read Aloud Programs - Participate in the Book Club where novels are read aloud to residents, or drop in with the Short Story group.

Trips – Join the group for lunch at a favorite restaurant, or on a trip out to view the fall foliage or holiday lights. Summer favorites are the trips to Prescott Park in Portsmouth for the outdoor plays and concerts.

Olde Time Television Shows – The old shows are still great fun. Remember Dean Martin and the Gold Diggers, Burns & Allen, Red Skelton and Clem Kadiddlehopper, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan and Bob Hope.

Movies & Videos – We have Friday Night at the Movies and Sunday Family Matinee. We bring On Stage performances – (Sinatra, Elvis, Elton John, John Denver, Barbara Streisand to name a few) to you on our new 60” high definition plasma televisions. Enjoy Broadway shows like Cats, Oklahoma, Rent, Cabaret, Chicago with your friends from the comfort of the parlor.

Games – Songburst, Pictionary, Cribbage, Poker, Bingo, Name that Tune, and What’s My Line. Scrabble anyone?

The Deck Pack – join the group that enjoys sitting in the sun in a comfy wicker chair on our backyard deck, or the after supper group that enjoys conversation and the warm summer ocean breezes after the heat of the day.

And there is so much more. If there is music, we are singing it; if there is a game, we are playing it; if there is a good movie, we are watching it. Otherwise, we are cooking, planting, discussing, exercising or heading off to the Elementary School for an intergenerational activity. Our Therapy Dog program is a favorite, as it rekindles memories of family pets and that non-judgmental love that only pets provide.

Exercise & Geriatric Fitness Programs

There are multiple and various opportunities to stay active.

Through a coordinated program between our resident services program nurse, your primary care physician, and our geriatric fitness counselor, you can participate in a personalized strength and flexibility program in our Fitness Zone.

Or if more lighthearted - yet therapeutic group exercise appeals to you, join our Armchair Exercise Group.

We offer other opportunities also through our Springtime Walking Club or our Wii Bowling League.
